Given how few students live off campus, on campus housing is where 95% + of students are living. As such, people often spend lots of time and effort making their dorms as home-like as they can. They also throw LOTS of parties in dorms, which has it's pluses and minuses. Campus security can be a pain in the ass while you're underage, but you also don't have to worry as much about finding a DD and stuffing into a tiny car to drive 5 miles through the dark Vermont icy roads. Some of the upper classmen dorms are like palaces while others are your standard suite. The best of all worlds is the senior on campus houses, which, if you find enough people to live with you senior year, are about as good as you can get.
