The Berkeley United In Literacy Development (BUILD) program trains Cal students to serve as literacy or math tutors to K-8th grade youth in Berkeley or Oakland after-school programs. BUILD runs during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. BUILD tutors develop teaching and tutoring skills, learn about educational issues in the local community, and earn either education units or an hourly wage through Work Study. At the same time, youth in the community increase their literacy or math skills and are exposed to the possibility of college.
BUILD operates at 14 different afterschool program sites in Berkeley and Oakland, including two math sites. Each BUILD program is managed by a BUILD Student Director, who is in charge of hiring and managing the site tutor team in partnership with a staff Program Director employed by the site. BUILD is a part of the national America Reads and America Counts campaigns, and a partner of the Jewish Coalition for Literacy and the Graduate School of Education, both of which provide tutor training support.
