There are so many hotels around and about the University of California at Berkeley. You have plenty of options but most of them are at the city price scale. I myself prefer the Hilton, however there are some cheaper, small options that are mentionable. The Berkeley Travel Lodge is a great place to spend a few days while you are hunting your apartment or just getting settled in around Berkeley. Its well placed so your not far away from virtually anything you need to get to. The Downtown Inn is a rather seedy place that nonetheless will give you shelter if you need it.
