The George A. Miller Scholars Program is designed to provide outstanding community college transfer students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential, commitment to community service, and who would benefit from mentoring, with a scholarship and research/community service stipend. The students spend an entire academic year developing research and leadership skills while they plan an academic research or community service project, which they conduct under the guidance of a faculty mentor during the summer and throughout the following academic year. Each year, the George A. Miller Scholars Program will select ten outstanding low-income, first generation college students who have transferred to UC Berkeley from one of California's community colleges. Students are selected based on their leadership potential, academic excellence, and their commitment to community service and education. Once selected, George A. Miller Scholars have the choice of two tracks: academic research or community service. George A. Miller Scholars receive training and support for the design and implementation of a project involving either original research with a Berkeley faculty mentor or completion of a community service project. George A. Miller Scholars receive a $7,000 scholarship over two years ($2,050 per academic year and $2,400 in the summer for their research/community service projects), contingent upon their active participation in scheduled program activities and successful completion of program requirements. Miller Scholars also have access to $500 to help with research costs and supplies. In addition, Miller Scholars receive mentoring from UC Berkeley faculty, as well as from other Miller Scholars. Miller Scholars participate in weekly sessions on study skills, time management, undergraduate research, and graduate school preparation, and they attend regular social gatherings with previous Miller Scholars. Furthermore, they receive ongoing academic support and advising from Miller Scholars Program staff.
